Jewish reprisals intensified
after 1939, when the British
issued the White Paper, a
document that sought to ef-
fectively halt Jewish immi-
gration. In Jerusalem, the
Etzel and Lehi groups
planted bombs in several
government buildings. The
most famous of these is the
explosion which blew off a
wing of the King David Hotel -
which housed the British 
military headquarters - and 
resulted in heavy casualties.
